Published works and publisher agreements

There may be copyright restrictions on the deposit of previously published works into institutional repositories such as the ARROW Repository. Publisher agreements will vary and it is essential that you check your copyright transfer agreement for any restrictions.

Variations may include:

  • Published version can be deposited
  • Link must be to the published version
  • Submitted version can be deposited
  • Submitted version can be deposited immediately following publication
  • Deposit is allowed only after the expiration of an embargo

Important: Ensure your copyright transfer agreement allows you to use your work in the way you want to.

The SHERPA RoMEO database provides a summary of permissions that are normally given as part of each publisher’s copyright transfer agreement. Refer to the Special RoMEO Page Publishers Allowing use of their PDFs in Repositories for publisher copyright policies & self-archiving.

Third-party copyright and ‘Fair Dealing’

It is the responsibility of authors to secure permission to use any third-party material in their work, from the rights holder.

Researchers can rely on a special provision in the Australian Copyright Act known as ‘Fair Dealing’ for the use of third-party content during the actual process of conducting research, but this provision does not apply to publication.

Multiple authors

If your work has multiple authors, each author must agree to the self-archiving of the work.
